How to Use a Digital Multimeter (DMM)

The essential guide to measuring Voltage, Current, and Resistance with a DMM.

Introduction

The Digital Multimeter is the most versatile tool in electronics. It helps you verify if your circuit is receiving power and if components are working.

Measurement Modes

  1. Voltage (V): Measured in parallel.
  2. Resistance (Ω): Measured with power OFF.
  3. Current (A): Measured in series (breaking the circuit).
  4. Continuity (♪): Checks if two points are electrically connected.

Safety Rules

  • Never measure current in parallel with a power source (it will blow the fuse!).
  • Always check the range setting before measuring high voltages.
  • Discharge large capacitors before measuring resistance.
